This reminds me (and I'm dating myself lol) of Days of the Tentacle and more recently, Life is Strange. I like these games for the story they tell, but sometimes I do wish they let the story unfold regardless of whether you choose to solve a puzzle or not (i.e., what if they meet but they don't go on the trip together?) sort of thing.
I can really date myself - this reminds me a little of Heart of China!
I see what you mean about branching storylines. But since it's foremost a puzzle/adventure game, putting too much focus on narrative gameplay, like branching outcomes, would have diluted the former. And since I'm more a fan of adventure than narrative games, I'm happy they kept it linear!
