I must admit that I had expected a driving game. Instead, I got an on-rails action puzzler where deftly hitting forward and reverse is how one survives Stunt Paradise’s crazy set pieces. And I’m happier for it—in hindsight, steering the stunt car in this game would have been very frustrating, causing crashes into oncoming obstacles and spoiling the cool factor.
Stunt Paradise is all about looking cool. Hit ramps at speed, sending your vehicle flying over the scenery as the game swoops its camera around. Since you don’t steer your car, the levels can stage crazy moments such as near misses with aeroplanes and gunning full-throttle up the Great Sphinx’s forehead.
Your job is to move the car forward and backwards at the right moments, clearing interesting puzzles that combine timing and momentum. It’s not about driving at all; Stunt Paradise is more comparable to creative side-scrollers or perhaps even action-focused physics puzzlers. This is not a game where you want to proceed cautiously. It’s fun to push forward and try to anticipate upcoming obstacles. Learn the hard way: one mistake, and you start over, but a clean run is very satisfying, and there are different vehicles to extend replayability.
The demo’s last level is the best showcase of what the full game might offer, which I hope will escalate into some very challenging runs (with 50 levels, I expect it will). Stunt Paradise is already technically solid, visually polished, and blasts a fun soundtrack. Boiling over with potential, it’s even more impressive when you learn this is the work of a solo developer.
If you were hoping to buckle up and grab the wheel, this game isn’t for you. But there is more than one way to experience extreme stunt driving, and Stunt Paradise does it in a way that really amplifies the action and excitement.
Stunt Paradise is due out in 2024.
