You wake up in a filthy cell. Where are you? Who are you? And what's with the knife in your hands? If you want answers, you must enter a run-down asylum filled with ghouls and other monsters. And they are not there to look after your health. But don't worry—you can stab and slash for your life, soon adding a revolver and shotgun to the mix.
Welcome to Forgive Me Father 2, the follow-up to the surprise boomer shooter hit. Aesthetically, it builds on the first game. Yet this is a new experience with a unique story, characters, and locations, using the series' iconic comic book art style and early Nineties first-person shooter sprites. It’s also a modern game, delivering high-resolution art and clever uses of lighting to blend action with Lovecraftian cosmic horror. Expect the early access release on 19 October.
Best Demo Moment: It's not a boomer shooter without a boom stick
AIIG's Take: We love the term' boomer shooter' because we don't believe it means 'old people's FPS game'. A boomer shooter has none of those dainty, sophisticated, precision mechanics that today's triple-A shooters all seem to copy. No, Boomer, as in BOOM: take no prisoners, let-God-sort-them-out violence that paints the walls in crimson with frantic gameplay, epic enemies, and very satisfying weapons. And boy, if you want some bloody decoration in an old-fashioned, raw-knuckled FPS package, Forgive Me Father 2 delivers.
This game is more paced than its high-speed peers, complementing the moody horror atmosphere. Visually, it's as unique as its predecessor with an intentional comic book style. We particularly like how the game uses sprites, retaining a flat feeling (working well with the graphic novel art style) yet adding more detail and angles than you've ever seen in a classic sprite FPS. The lighting also enhances the experience—the demo has a section where you keep boosting an iffy flashlight while hunting enemies in dark rooms.
Forgive Me Father 2 won't be for everyone. It's uncompromising about its retro aesthetic. But if you enjoy classic FPS games, check out this demo.
